Prismo Crowns vs traditional silver crowns comparison chart, including same insurance coverage

How to Bill Colored Stainless Steel Crowns: CDT Code D2930 Explained

The most common question we hear from office managers is simple: “How do we bill a colored crown?” The answer is just as simple. You bill it exactly the way you bill a silver one.

The code: D2930

Prismo Crowns are prefabricated stainless steel crowns. On a primary tooth, that means CDT code D2930 – prefabricated stainless steel crown, primary tooth, the same code you already use for traditional silver crowns. The color comes from a patented laser-assisted process with no dye, no paint and no coating, so the crown itself is still a stainless steel crown. There is no separate code for color and no add-on fee to file.

(For a permanent tooth, a prefabricated stainless steel crown is D2931. Most Prismo cases are primary molars, so D2930 is the code you will use day to day.)

Documentation: nothing changes

  • Same prep, same placement, same notes. Chart the procedure as you would any stainless steel crown.
  • Same pre-op radiographs and narrative, if the payer requires them for SSCs.
  • Follow your usual consent process. The procedure is the same as a silver crown; if you like, you can also note the color the patient chose in the chart.

Insurance and Medicaid

Because the procedure and code are identical, plans that cover a stainless steel crown on a primary tooth treat a Prismo Crown the same way, including Medicaid programs. As always, confirm frequency limits and coverage with the patient’s specific plan, exactly as you would for silver.

What to tell parents

Parents usually expect color to cost more. A short script your front desk can use:

“Your child gets to pick the color, and it’s billed the same way as a silver crown, so your cost is the same as silver under your plan.”

That one sentence removes the main objection and lets the child’s excitement do the rest.

Why it matters for your practice

Offering a choice that costs parents nothing extra is one of the easiest ways to stand out locally. Kids show their crowns off, parents mention it to other parents, and your practice becomes known as the one that does things differently.

Get started

Most practices start with the Intro Kit: 48 crowns in sizes 3, 4 and 5 across all primary molars. Busy offices go straight to the Pro Kit (240 crowns, every size). Questions about billing? Contact us and we will reply within one business day.
