Pediatric Stainless Steel Crown Sizes 2–7: A Chairside Sizing Guide

If you already place silver stainless steel crowns, you already know how to size a Prismo Crown. Prismo uses the standard pediatric sizing system, sizes 2 through 7, and sizing is comparable to 3M™ stainless steel crowns: the size you place today is the size you pick with Prismo. Here is a quick refresher, plus tips on stocking color so you are never short a size mid-case.

How SSC sizing works

Pediatric stainless steel crowns are sized by tooth (upper or lower, first or second primary molar, left or right) and then by number. Smaller numbers are smaller crowns. Because the sizing follows the universal system, the size you would reach for in silver is the size you reach for in Prismo. No conversion chart is needed.

Switching from 3M or Hu-Friedy

Prismo Crown sizing is comparable to 3M™ stainless steel crowns, so if your team already stocks and places 3M crowns, you can order the same sizes in Prismo. Providers also report that the fit lines up with Hu-Friedy® sizing. Chairside trial-and-fit works exactly the same way; there is nothing new to learn.

Chairside selection

1. Estimate from the prep. Start with the size that matches the mesiodistal width of the prepared tooth, as you would with any SSC.
2. Try in. Look for a snug “snap” over the height of contour with margins just below the gingiva.
3. Adjust only if needed. Trim, contour and crimp using your normal instruments and protocol.
4. Check occlusion, then cement with your usual luting cement.

Same tools, same steps, same visit. The only new step is letting the child pick a color before you start.

Which sizes you will use most

Sizes 3, 4 and 5 are the most commonly used pediatric crown sizes. That is why our Intro Kit includes 48 crowns in exactly those sizes across all primary molars. It is the simplest way to start offering color on real cases.
